How Affiliate Tracking Links Work (Without the Jargon)

What happens when someone clicks your affiliate link: redirects, click IDs, attribution windows, and why ad blockers, app switches and copied links can lose credit.

Your tracking link is the single most important thing in affiliate marketing. Without it, nobody knows the customer came from you. Here is what actually happens when someone taps it.

Step 1: the click is recorded

When a visitor opens your link, the tracking server records the click: the time, the campaign, your publisher ID and any sub ID you added. The click gets its own unique identifier, often called a click ID.

Step 2: the redirect

Almost instantly, the visitor is redirected to the advertiser’s landing page or app store page. The click ID travels along, in the URL or stored by the advertiser’s systems.

Step 3: the visitor converts

The visitor buys, signs up or installs. The advertiser’s system sees the click ID connected to that visit.

Step 4: the conversion is reported

The advertiser reports the conversion, including the click ID. The conversion is matched to your original click, so it is credited to you. At this point it is usually pending.

Step 5: validation and approval

After the campaign’s validation period, the advertiser confirms or rejects the conversion. Only approved conversions become earnings. See conversion validation explained.

The attribution window

Most campaigns credit a conversion only if it happens within a set time after the click, known as the attribution window or tracking period. If someone clicks today but buys after the window has closed, the sale will not be credited. We explain this in the attribution window explained.

Why credit can be lost

Tracking is reliable, but it is not magic. Common reasons a conversion is missing:

  • Last click wins. If the customer later clicks another affiliate’s link or an ad, that click may take credit.
  • Device switching. Clicking on a phone and buying on a laptop can break the link between click and sale.
  • Privacy settings. Some browsers and ad blockers limit tracking.
  • Copied URLs. If someone copies the final shop URL instead of using your link, the click ID is lost.
  • Apps opening directly. Some links open an installed app, and app tracking depends on how the advertiser has set it up.
  • The action did not qualify. For example, an existing customer when the campaign pays only for new ones.
  1. Use the link exactly as given. Do not edit the structure.
  2. Test your link once before you share it, and check that it opens the right page.
  3. Use one link per campaign, and sub IDs to tell placements apart.
  4. Put the link where people act. “Link in bio” adds a step; a direct link in Stories or a pinned message is often better.
  5. Refresh old posts when a campaign ends. Dead campaigns waste your audience’s clicks.

On M2E, each campaign link is a short branded link that is unique to you and that campaign. It carries your publisher ID so clicks and conversions are credited to you. You can add ?sub1=your-label to see which post or channel drove each click in your statistics.

Key takeaway

A tracking link records the click, redirects the visitor and carries an ID that lets the conversion be matched back to you. Use it unchanged, keep it close to the moment of decision and track your placements so you know what works.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shorten or edit my tracking link?

Do not change the link itself. If you edit parameters you may break tracking. Use the link exactly as provided, adding only supported options such as a sub ID.

Why did a friend’s purchase not show up?

Common causes are buying outside the attribution window, clicking a different link later, switching devices, blocked cookies or the order failing validation.

Does the same link work for every campaign?

No. On M2E each campaign has its own link, and every link carries your publisher ID.
