The idea behind affiliate marketing is universal: recommend something, send a customer, earn for the result. But publishers in India work in a market with its own habits, payment rails and rules. Understanding them helps you choose better campaigns and avoid surprises.
A mobile-first audience
Most Indian internet users browse, shop and bank on their phones. That shapes everything:
- App campaigns are common. Many advertisers want installs, registrations or first transactions inside an app rather than a website purchase.
- Short content wins attention. Reels, Shorts and quick Telegram posts get seen; long pages need to be fast and easy to read on a small screen.
- Landing pages must work on mobile data. If the advertiser page is slow, conversions drop. That is outside your control, so pick campaigns that convert well on phones.
Language matters
India is multilingual, and many creators reach their best audience in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi or another regional language. A recommendation in your audience’s language often feels more trustworthy than a polished English caption. Check that the advertiser’s app or site supports the language your audience is comfortable with.
Deal culture
Indian shoppers love a good deal. Sale seasons such as festive sales around Diwali, end-of-season fashion sales and big app shopping events create spikes in demand. Many successful publishers run deal channels that share verified offers quickly. If you go down that route, accuracy matters: an expired coupon costs you trust.

How payouts work
Indian publishers are typically paid by bank transfer (NEFT/IMPS) or UPI. On M2E the flow is:
- A conversion is recorded and starts as pending validation.
- After the campaign’s validation period, the advertiser confirms it and it becomes approved.
- Approved earnings become payable once your payment details are verified.
- Our finance team pays payable earnings and records a payment reference.
We explain every stage in affiliate payout stages explained.
Validation takes time
New publishers are often surprised that a sale made today is not paid tomorrow. Advertisers need time to handle returns, cancellations, failed KYC and fraud checks. A shopping campaign might wait out the return window; a finance campaign might wait for account activation. Plan for this delay, and check each campaign’s validation period before joining.
Disclosure rules
The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has guidelines for influencer advertising. If you earn from a recommendation, label it clearly and visibly. A tag buried among many hashtags is not enough. Finance-related content has extra expectations. Read our ASCI disclosure guide.
Tax basics
Affiliate earnings are income and are taxable. Depending on your situation you may need to think about income tax filing, TDS deducted by the payer and GST registration. Rules change and depend on individual circumstances, so speak to a chartered accountant. Our tax and GST basics article lists the questions to ask.
Traffic rules are strict
Every campaign lists allowed and disallowed traffic sources. Common restrictions include no brand-keyword bidding in search ads, no incentivised installs and no spam messaging. Breaking them can lead to rejected conversions and account action. When in doubt, ask before you promote.

Frequently asked questions
Can I receive affiliate payouts by UPI?
Many Indian platforms pay by bank transfer or UPI. On M2E, payable earnings are paid to verified bank or UPI details that you add in your account.
Which channels work best for Indian affiliates?
There is no single best channel. Instagram and YouTube work well for reviews and demos, while Telegram and WhatsApp suit deal sharing. Always check which channels a campaign allows.
Do I need a GST number to start?
Not necessarily. Whether you need GST registration depends on your turnover and circumstances. Speak to a chartered accountant for advice on your situation.
