App Install (CPI) Campaigns Explained: Quality Installs That Count

How app install and engagement campaigns work, what makes an install valid, why incentivised installs are often banned, and how to promote apps responsibly, including the rules on real-money gaming.

Apps need users, and affiliate campaigns are one of the ways they get them. CPI campaigns are simple to understand but strict about quality.

What counts

  • Install and open (basic CPI)
  • Registration or a first action (CPA-style)
  • Retention events, such as returning on day 2

What makes an install low quality

  • immediate uninstalls
  • many installs from the same device
  • users with no interest, for example people paid to install
  • installs from regions outside the campaign’s scope

Incentivised traffic

Some campaigns allow rewarded installs; many do not. Check the terms before you promote.

Real-money gaming is off limits

India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games and their promotion. Stick to casual games, e-sports, utilities, shopping and other legitimate apps. M2E does not run real-money gaming campaigns.

Content that works

  • “Five apps I use every day” lists.
  • Short demos of a feature that solves a problem.
  • Casual game clips with honest impressions.

How advertisers judge install quality

Advertisers look beyond the install itself. Typical quality signals include:

  • whether users open the app after installing
  • whether they register or complete onboarding
  • whether they return in the following days
  • whether installs come from many different devices and locations, as expected

Campaigns may reject installs that show unusual patterns, even if they were recorded.

Pre-qualifying for app installs

Tell people what the app does, who it is for and whether it costs anything. Installs from people who understand the app are more likely to become active users, and more likely to be approved.

Gaming content done right

Casual and free-to-play games are popular. Good gaming content:

  • shows real gameplay
  • is honest about ads and in-app purchases
  • is suitable for the audience, especially if it is young
  • avoids any promotion of real-money games

Device and platform targeting

Some campaigns are Android only, iOS only or limited to certain OS versions. Check this before you promote; installs from the wrong platform do not count.

Tracking app campaigns

Use separate sub IDs for each video or post. App campaigns can vary widely in how well they convert for different audiences.

Key takeaway

Promote apps people will actually keep using. Quality installs get approved; the rest do not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay people to install an app?

Only if the campaign explicitly allows incentivised traffic, which many do not. Otherwise those installs are rejected.

Can I promote real-money gaming apps?

No. India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games and their advertising. M2E does not run such campaigns.
